Several of the nation’s largest providers of nuclear energy recently gathered in Raleigh, N.C., for an ORAU Exercise Builder workshop to focus on improving emergency preparedness across their facilities. ORAU is working with these energy companies to streamline their emergency exercise planning processes for more effective and consistent response training.

Workshop attendees received a copy of ORAU’s Exercise Builder© application which provides a systematic approach to developing exercise plans, setting drill objectives and reporting. The two-day, hands-on workshop provides a best-practices approach to emergency exercise development leveraging Exercise Builder as an easy-to-use software component. Attendees practiced applying an exercise design methodology and developing exercise plans in Exercise Builder, led by experienced ORAU instructors.

Progress Energy hosted the event, bringing the educational opportunity to many of their emergency management team members. Duke Energy and South Carolina Electric and Gas also participated.

ORAU launched Exercise Builder in 2004. Today more than 200 organizations, including the U.S. Department of Energy, the Veteran’s Administration and Progress Energy use this methodology and software application to reduce the time and costs associated with exercise development as well as improve training quality and reporting consistency.
