Center of Excellence for Radioactive Ion Beam Studies for Stewardship Science

ORAU scientists prepare equipment for radioactive ion beam research.

The Center of Excellence for Radioactive Ion Beam Studies for Stewardship Science is a collaboration between Rutgers University, the University Radioactive Ion Beam Consortium/Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Tennessee Technological University, Colorado School of Mines, the University of North Carolina and the NNSA Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratories.

The aim of the Center is to provide nuclear structure input on unstable species of importance to nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics and science-based stockpile stewardship.

The Center focuses its research in the following areas:

  • Neutron transfer measurements—providing information useful for nuclear structure, astrophysics and stewardship science studies.
  • Ion source development—understanding the processes that take place in a target-ion source in order to optimize the purification and intensity of beams.
  • Oak Ridge Rutgers University Barrel Array (ORRUBA)— identifying protons that result when radioactive ion beams are directed at a target of deuterium.
