ORAU’s 2026 Earth Day recycling event: Breaking records and building community

By all measures, ORAU’s 2026 Earth Day recycling event was a record-breaking success. This year’s two-day collection drive had the highest participation, donation and overall weight totals since the event’s inception in 2010. Read about the history of this event and why we do it in this blog. Employees eagerly joined in the effort, bringing a variety of items for techno recycling, donations and secure file shredding on April 21-22. From old TVs to weed eaters and from Christmas décor to bank statements, participants took advantage of the opportunity to declutter and contribute to a better community.

The results were nothing short of impressive: ORAU employees diverted a whopping 25,830 lbs. of materials from landfills! The event’s organization was seamless with daily tallies and efficient processes that made it easy for everyone to participate. Even off-site employees and retirees were involved.

Spotlight on community partners:

Michael Dunn Center- ORAU employees pulling up to drop off items were greeted by the Michael Dunn Center’s truck. This Roane County organization has spent more than 50 years enhancing the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through education, employment, residential support and day programs. The center is known to empower people to achieve greater independence and inclusion within their communities. Their document shredding service, a favorite among ORAU Earth Day participants, securely destroyed more than 1,600 lbs. of personal papers this year.

ASAP offers lock boxes to hold medication.

Allies of Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) of Anderson County- ASAP’s presence at the event provided a safe way to dispose of unwanted, expired or unused medications. This nonprofit works to reduce substance misuse and prevent overdose by ensuring medications don’t end up in the wrong hands. Furthermore, the U.S. Geological Survey cites “growing concerns” over pharmaceuticals not being filtered out of our water systems from people flushing medications. ORAU employees diverted 162 lbs. of medication during the 2026 recycling event, contributing to safer and cleaner water systems and fewer instances of substance abuse.

The Ecumenical Storehouse- Reusing is even better than recycling, and donations to the Ecumenical Storehouse give items a second life while meeting the needs of individuals in crisis. ORAU employees dropped off everything but the kitchen sink (I looked!) during the collection drive. This volunteer-run organization serves multiple counties, providing household goods to those displaced by emergencies. Volunteers were thrilled to receive 298 pounds of donations, including highly sought-after items like toasters!
