ORAU: Then & Now

VIDEO: Behind the scenes maintaining the U.S. Climate Reference Network

NOAA’s ATDD team manages the U.S. Climate Reference Network.

The U.S. Climate Reference Network was established in the early 2000s by the Air Resources Laboratory, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This network of measurement stations is managed by ORAU’s team in the Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Division (ATDD) office.

The data that is gathered is collected from remote areas across the country that are not influenced by human sprawl (things like asphalt impacting surface temperature and buildings impacting wind and rain).

Get a peek behind the curtain and learn about the dedicated team who battles the elements—and sometimes wildlife—to ensure the data is as accurate as possible.

The team at ATDD also keeps an eye on how the climate is impacted in populous cities. That research is called UrbanNet.
