Dress Code Policy
Onboarding Checklist Item: Review the dress code policy, and then sign and submit the dress code policy on Zintellect.
You are required to bring several types of clothing for the two weeks of the program. The Appalachian STEM Academy is responsible for ensuring that student attire does not interfere with the health or safety of any student. The requirements below apply equally to all students.
If a student fails to adhere to the dress code, staff will respectfully and professionally ask the student to change their attire.
Laundry facilities are available and will be offered to students after the first week during the allotted time on the schedule. Students should have enough clothing for at least one full week.
- No ripped clothing.
- No clothing that will expose underwear including boxers, sports bras, and bras.
- No saggy clothing (saggy pants revealing underwear or any portion of the body below the naval).
- No short shorts or miniskirts. Clothing must at least hit mid-thigh (please refer to the figure below).
- No clothing with inappropriate logos or language including drugs or alcohol brand names, suggestive slogans, politics, violence, hate speech or profanity.
- No crop tops or halter tops.
- No shirts with straps thinner than 1 inch.
- Shoes must always be worn unless you are in your room.
- For final presentations and first day of research at ORNL, you must wear business casual.
- Nice slacks, dress shirts and ties, polo shirts, blouses, dress slacks or nice pants, mid-thigh skirts or dresses
- During research, you must wear lab appropriate attire:
- Closed toe shoes
- Pants
- Nice casual attire (NO athletic wear, leggings, shorts, or shirts that do not cover shoulders)
- No loose clothing or jewelry
- Long hair pulled back
- No hats
- No 1- or 2-piece swimsuit that shows mid-section.
- No swim briefs.
- Athletic wear for physical activities
- At least 1 outfit that can get muddy, sweaty, or wet (some research groups may have an outdoor component)
- Weeks’ worth of research clothing:
- Closed toe shoes
- Nice casual attire (NO athletic wear, leggings, shorts, or shirts that do not cover shoulders)
- No loose clothing or jewelry
- Long hair pulled back
- No hats
- At least 2 outfits for educational and cultural activities:
- Mid-thigh shorts, jeans, slacks, t-shirts, polos, mid-thigh skirts or dresses, sandals or sneakers, athletic wear, and leggings
- At least 2 business casual outfits, one for final presentations and one first day of research at ORNL:
- Nice slacks, dress shirts and ties, polo shirts, blouses, dress slacks or nice jeans, mid-thigh skirts or dresses
