Environmental Monitoring

Laboratory-oriented training course introduces theories and methods of measuring outdoor radiation levels

Introduction

Monitoring programs for environmental radioactivity have been, or are being, established at many facilities. It is essential to ensure that the appropriate types of samples are collected, that the appropriate measurements are made, that the correct sampling and measurement techniques are employed, and that the best locations for these samples and measurements are selected. To help meet the need for trained personnel in this area, ORAU conducts a five-day training course—Environmental Monitoring. The American Academy of Health Physics grants 40 Continuing Education Credits for completion of this course. The American Board of Industrial Hygiene grants 5.0 Certification Maintenance Points to CIHs for completion of this course.

Training dates

April 15-19, 2019 (registration coming soon)

Course description

This five-day, laboratory-oriented course introduces participants to the basic theories and mechanics of environmental monitoring for radioactivity. Approximately 50% of the time is spent collecting and analyzing samples; the remaining time is devoted to lectures.

Who should attend

This course is for individuals who are designing and/or implementing environmental monitoring programs and have limited practical and/or theoretical experience in this area.

Cost

$1,995 - The tuition includes the full cost of training, books, and instructional materials. Attendees will also receive a free copy of the ORAU Professional Training Programs Electronic Library DVD.

    What our students are saying

“This course really brought environmental field monitoring to life. There was much practical info I can apply to my job!”

“The laboratory and off-site labs were excellent experiences. Sampling the sleu (stream) sediment and surveying the old American Nuclear Corporation site were excellent four steps that added a realistic flavor to course where often they would be simulated environments.”

“Hearing Paul Frame tell his stories! Actually, as I listened to him describe/explain how to use the ponar dredge, I realized that I need to modify my sediment sampling procedure to better describe how to use the dredge.”
