Radiation may be defined as energy traveling through space. Non-ionizing radiation is essential to life, but excessive exposures will cause tissue damage. All forms of ionizing radiation have sufficient energy to ionize atoms that may destabilize molecules within cells and lead to tissue damage. Rule 10 CFR 835 established the Department of Energy’s (DOE) occupational protection rule and requires assessment and recording of radiation doses to individuals who are exposed to sources of radiation or contamination.
Guidelines, Procedures, and Best Practices
DOE Training Resources
Department of Energy (DOE) provides information on recommended training material to give hazard specific training for radiological workers at various types of DOE facilities and for various activities. Please notify the appropriate people at your site that these following DOE documents are available as a PDF file through the DOE Radiation Safety Training Materials Page.
Tools and Other Resources
- Radiation Exposure Information and Reporting System (REIRS)
Nuclear Regulatory Commission
Radiation Exposure Information and Reporting System (REIRS) for Radiation Workers provides information on radiation exposure to the workforce at certain NRC licensed facilities. Only occupationally exposed workers are included in the databases.
- Occurrence Reporting and Processing System (ORPS)
Department of Energy
The Department of Energy's Occurrence Reporting Program provides timely notification to the DOE complex of events that could adversely affect: public or DOE worker health and safety, the environment, national security, DOE's safeguards and security interests, functioning of DOE facilities, or the Department's reputation.
- Radiation Exposure Monitoring Systems (REMS)
Department of Energy
REMS is the database of occupational radiation exposures for all monitored DOE employees, contractors, subcontractors and members of the public. The Rule 10 CFR 835.702 requires annual individual radiation exposure records to be recorded. DOE Order 231.1B requires the reporting of monitoring results to the REMS Repository in accordance with the specifications provided in REMS Reporting Guide.
